Total U.S. passenger flights operated in September were up 3.5 percent year over year to nearly 618,000, yet were down 4.5 percent from August 2024, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation's latest Air Travel Consumer Report.

For September, reporting carriers canceled about 3,670 of scheduled flights, about 0.6 percent, lower than the 1.2 percent rate from September 2023 and the 2 percent canceled rate in August 2024.

Airlines with the lowest September percentage of cancellations include Delta Air Lines Network, JetBlue and Southwest Airlines, each with a 0.4 percent cancellation rate. Networks include branded codeshare partners. Carriers with the highest percentage of canceled flights include Allegiant Air (2.3 percent), Frontier Airlines (1.6 percent) and Spirit Airlines (1.2 percent).

Reporting carrier in September handled 37.5 million bags for a mishandled baggage rate of 0.42 percent, lower than both the rate of 0.53 percent in September 2023 and 0.64 percent in August 2024.
